Being a student-athlete at the University of Connecticut, I decided soon after graduation that I wanted to share my love and appreciation for UConn with everyone around me. I kept a diary throughout my senior year which has become my book, Heart of a Husky. This is a depiction of my experiences as I worked towards my dream of winning a National Championship. The book takes the reader through my childhood years to my adventures with the United States Pan American team in Brazil. It provides insight into the many relationships I developed with my teammates, coaches, and fans — painting an overall picture of what it's really like to play for UConn. Please take advantage of this opportunity to share in my memorable experiences as a UConn Husky.
~Mel Thomas
Mel Thomas will always be remembered as one of the toughest kids ever to play at UConn. That is saying a lot, considering the many great players who have played here!
Mel became a great three-point shooter, but more importantly, she became invaluable to our program because of her grit and determination. She led our team in minutes played for a reason—I trusted her. I knew we were a better team with Mel on the court.
I’m not surprised that Mel has been able to put into words what she embodies as a person. She is a tremendous inspiration to anyone who aspires to compete at the highest levels, in any endeavor.
The final game of our season during Mel’s senior year, we lost in the Final Four. There is no doubt in my mind that if Mel were healthy and able to play, we would have won the game. Why? Because Mel Thomas is a winner — and a great role model for kids and adults of all ages.
Mel will be available for book
signings, speeches, or skills clinics when she return to the States in April
2010.
